From the organizer:
You are invited to exhibition ‘Come to [what] end?’ by Pham Dinh Tien, Rudy Atjeh, and Nguyen Tran Nam. This is the ‘San Art Laboratory: Session 5’ final exhibition resulting from an intensive 6 month residency, with each artist intrigued with distinct local social histories and tragic recent global disasters.
Pham Dinh Tien ponders the idea of ‘fate’ – sudden events occur in our lives that are out of our control. Inspired by the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 incident, Tien’s sculpture and installation compel us to see ourselves as the passenger in the flights that can potentially go awry. How can we be prepared for the unexpected? Is it possible that our need for control in contemporary life is but an illusion?
Rudy Atjeh is fascinated by the visual similarities between text and pronunciation of the naming of Vietnam’s Champa Kingdom, compared to the Jeumpa Kingdom of Aceh (his hometown in Indonesia). He rediscovers a part of history of where he grew up, and weaves the narrative into an intricate and graceful paper-cutting work.
With Nguyen Tran Nam, while questioning if death is the ultimate punishment for a crime or a glorified act of sacrifice, he recognizes the weight of belief in the conscience of a deathly act (be it personal conviction, religious or political). His sculptural works question how we determine what is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ in the act; the answer may lie on how we choose to believe in its justification.
