HA NOI (VNS)— An exhibition of Vietnamese folk paintings has opened in Paris. On display are 65 paintings from craft villages across Viet Nam such as Dong Ho (northern province of Bac Ninh), Hang Trong (Ha Noi), Kim Hoang (Ha Noi), Sinh (central province of Thua Thien-Hue), Doc Loi (central province of Nghe An), and Vu Di (northern province of Vinh Phuc).
Although created in different styles, the paintings share similar striking colours and strong brush work reflecting Vietnamese aspirations for a peaceful, well-off and happy life.
The themes vary from scenes of daily life, farming work, religious activities and historical events.
Jacques Jeandaud, a French researcher on Vietnamese culture, said the paintings were educative and easy to understand. “Visitors don’t have to read the captions to enjoy them,” he said.
The exhibition is being held by the Viet Nam Fine Arts Museum and the Vietnamese Cultural Centre in France to mark the 40th anniversary of Viet Nam-France diplomatic ties. It will run until September 16. — VNS
