His efforts won him first prize among 123 pieces compiled by artists from Hong Red (River) Delta provinces, now on display at a new exhibition in Ha Noi.
The artists all range in origin, from Ha Tay (now part of Ha Noi), Bac Ninh, Ha Nam, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, Quang Ninh and Thai Binh. Of the pieces, 53 are from members of the Viet Nam Fine Arts Association and 70 are from members of local literature and art associations.
The work on display includes paintings, drawings and sculptures, all sharing the common theme of life itself. Many of them feature peaceful landscapes of the countryside, the nostalgia of war, and the routines and challenges of modern society such as natural disasters, poverty and even traffic jams.
According to Le Huy Tiep, a painter and president of the jury board, the pieces on display are not only successful in portraying these themes, but also beautiful.
“They depict various themes of life and many of them depict the burning problems of society like the three pieces that won prizes,” he said. “The piece that won first prize is remarkable, featuring countryside people heading to the city to find work.”
“The work on display brings with it profound and deep colours and the breath of Red river culture typical of Vietnamese fine arts,” he added.
Bang Lam, vice president of the Viet Nam Fine Arts Association, also said that he appreciated the quality of work.
“The artists have changed their view in their creations and have touched upon many problems of society, instead of traditional themes,” he said. “They have brought a breath of fresh air to the domestic fine arts industry.”
The print Du an Treo I, II (The Suspended Projects I, II) by Nguyen Sinh Hung from Thai Binh province won second prize and an oil painting by Do Kich entitled Nguoi Me (The Mother) won third prize.
Five other outstanding pieces of work were also rewarded including Nho Ve Truong Son by Vu Xuan Duong from Nam Dinh, Hanh Phuc Nguoi Linh (The Soldier’s Happiness) by Phan Du from Ninh Binh; Nhung Nguoi Dan Ba Doi Non (The Women Wearing the Conical Hats) by Do Thang from Ha Nam.
The exhibition runs until August 8 at the Exhibition House, 16 Ngo Quyen Street, Ha Noi. — VNS
