The 32-year-old graduated from the University of Dundee, Scotland, in 1999 and has held exhibitions in his native country.
In his words, he has used oil, pens, and canvas to convey his reactions to his time in HCM City and tried to recreate the great colours that are everywhere here and also the various shapes and designs found in buildings and streets.
“My work is both personal and a reflection of my artistic feelings through colours and lines.”
The 14 pieces on display are varied in tone but all resemble a collective final product.
“I like some of them and some have just been a part of my daily, physical space here in Viet Nam,” he said.
His favourite is the Triptych.
“Tryptich has been an ongoing work in progress during my time in Viet Nam and it reminds me of living here and seeing the paintings develop. I do not want to sell it as it’s a memory of the living area of my partner and myself.
“I like the freeness with which it is painted and the abstract, figurative style which I have been trying to achieve in my work.”
The venue is at 15B Phan Dang Luu Hostel, Binh Thanh District, HCM City and the show goes on until July 6. — VNS
