Phong, who works at the Tuoi Tre (The Youth) newspaper, said: “I’m so happy to claim top prize at the inaugural press cartoon contest.”

In recognition of his talents and in line with the contest’s comical theme, Phong will receive a cash prize of VND13,131,313.
The judging panel also announced two second-place prizes worth VND7 million each as well as three third-place prizes worth VND3 million. Three talented cartoonists will each get consolation prizes of VND1 million.
The competition organised by the The Thao & Van Hoa (Sports & Culture) newspaper drew a total of 800 entries from 99 artists. The prize-winning works and select others are on display at 45 Trang Tien Street, Ha Noi until February 6.
Deserving works were also published in a book presented free to contestants. The book is on sale for VND50,000.
The cartoons address a wide range of subjects such as the economy and Vietnamese culture and society. Interestingly, anti-inflation was the most popular theme with 57 entries, followed by social evils with 26. Environmental issues such as pollution, traffic congestion, and deforestation accounted for 18 entries. — VNS
