The meeting was held to review the association’s past term, prepare for the next term 2007-11 and elect its new Standing Committee.
Editor-in-chief of the Nhi Dong (Children) newspaper and director of Fund for Supporting Young Talents, Vu Quang Vinh, was elected to be chairman of the Association’s new Standing Committee, which has 27 members.
Martial-art Master Le Ngoc Quang was elected to be secretary general of the Association.
As well as enticing new blood, the association plans over the next five years to encourage people studying the sport to promote the quintessence of each different type of martial art.
To boost development, the association intends to attract more organisations and individuals and get more people in the capital interested in the sport.
According to Master Le Ngoc Quang, deputy secretary general of the previous term, the association gained the following achievements from 2000 to 2005:
organised annual martial art festivals, which in 2004 saw martial arts performances by blind students at the Nguyen Dinh Chieu Blind School.
trained many martial artists to attend international competitions and festivals;
opened more than 50 training centres in Hanoi and other provinces, attracting thousands of martial artists;
introduced martial arts to be taught in the city’s schools; and
organised five training courses for trainers and masters.
Attendees also mentioned that the association held two courses in 2004 to give 61 martial art teachers the title of “martial masters”. Also, in 2005 the association admitted members from the former Soviet Union and Vietnamese working abroad.
At the congress, three martial art schools and three teachers got commendations and awards for their work. They included Binh Dinh Gia, Thang Long Vo Dao and Nam Hong Son, and three martial art masters: Tran Hung Quang from Binh Dinh Gia, Nguyen Ty from Nam Hong Son, and Phan Xuan Binh from Vinh Xuan school.
